Restorative poses are soothing and well-supported poses which offer
students an opportunity to linger quietly for a few moments and
allow the body to settle down. Restorative postures leave us
nourished and well rested. These poses are usually deeply supported
by blankets, blocks, or other props and are held for several minutes
at a time.
Although a restorative practice can be intimidating to beginners because of all the props, Jenilyn guides students on which props to use and how to use them. The more fully the body is supported by props the deeper the relaxation. Jenilyn has been teaching restorative yoga for over 5 years. She is able to gently welcome a timid beginner and can also create a deep opening for the advanced practitioner. These classes are often attended by people who have never taken yoga, are recovering from an injury/illness, or returning to yoga after years of not practicing. There are often a lot of exhausted mothers, caretakers and people in the helping professions who need to spend a couple of hours to nourish their bodies and spirits. Jenilyn begins with a few minutes of gentle movements and then leads the class in a series of restorative poses, which last anywhere from 5-15 minutes, with movement and meditation in-between the poses. Movement helps give the body a chance to release any restlessness before entering a place of stillness. Each student receives lots of individual attention within the pose as Jenilyn helps adjust and modify to achieve the greatest comfort and release. While in the pose Jenilyn takes students on guided visualizations. She often has fun themes like taking students on journeys to Hawaii, Ireland or the southwest. Jenilyn’s class is deeply inspired by Judith Lasater's Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times
